Default Ethiopian King of Vibes

Dudes,

you need to check out Mulatu Astatke...oldschool 70's ethiopian jazz, but live from april 2008...amazing african psychedelia.

He's like a drug induced, jazzfunky, instrumental version of Yabby You...from another dimension.

sun ra meets fela kuti...i can agree with that. But check out Mulatu Astatke's "Ethiopiques vol. 4" and listen to the sound...same color and dust.

It's almost as if Yabby You went to the studio one day ca 1973 and told Tommy McCook and the others: "let's play some groovy mental jazz today".

I mean, listen to the tune "revenge" from Yabby You's "Jesus Dread"-album ...to me it sounds very much like Mulatu Astatke, but in a more restrained roots fashion. Although it's different genres I get similar vibes from both of them.

Yo, I found a short 30 second clip of "revenge" here...take a listen...: Tommy McCook – Revenge – Lyssna gratis på Last.fm

Another jamaican musician that comes to mind is the late and great Lennie Hibbert. Sort of the jamaican equivalent to Mulatu Astatke, in the sense that he was a schooled musician who made instrumental music playing the vibes (and organ etc).

Lennie Hibbert's "Rose Len" has got to be the best non-reggae instrumental ever made in Jamaica:

I heard a wicked song with alot of horns on this compilation you mentioned. I heard it on an airplane (when I could afford to fly.) I don't remember the title, but I must have that song !
