Its a hard call on this one ! Im gonna try to be partial and analytic, expressing at same time MY point of view.
We all know recorded format never gave much money to artists, or at least not enough to feed a family, as a regular job would. If you take in account that the greediness of most labels we're throwing around 7% of the total profit of an album, that should say a lot. Not to count that it would take months for the artists even to start seeing anything ! Cuz first payment only comes after all costs covered (Studio time- charging prices way above average street rate, as most labels would have their own rec studio, printing, promotion CD's, etc etc)! Then again, ot was that elitism that kept things afloat and made BIG STARS (Even if a lot of them were a creation of someone with the contacts and the power).Cuz i can anme you , now, 50 artists I know that should have a record contract, and never got one(or at least had to fight for years on end to get one from independent labels, that dont really have the same machine behind it in promotion). Now, then came MP3 and the Ipod generation... And even the taste for quality music is almost extinct; We have kids thinking that an MP3 is allright as a recorded format, wher any decent speakers will tell you diferent. Even production went onto a total diferent route, as perfectly produced albums are being dissed cuz they wont sound as good on a lower-rate MP3 being heard through headphones( where we all know that neither the stereo perception is the same, nor the low frequencies develop the same way, as they dont have space to do so... Now, this of course has brought a lot creativity, as nowadays anyone can do a track decent enough to a lot of times compete with bigger budget projects... Boosted inspiration, increased options for choice, the music industry suffers... Now what i see being given away is, in a majority, compositions in a more digital aspect of music, and not REAL MUSIC made by a group of musicians (so to speak, as any music is music-Its just to get my point across ! ... I think everyone has the right to give their music away, as most people are not even bothered in investing in their own product. Then we came to a reality check : Has it affected the music industry overall? No doubt ! Does it have benefits ? I can find you a million people that say so ! Myself(as an example) , through the home-demos/ compositions i gave away, got me a lot of promotion, contracts for leasing instrumentals, compositions for Radio and even TV Ads/ Sales, DVD's etc... Productions and compositions for other artists... Do i regret giving it away ? NO Do i give it all away ? NO AGAIN ! But i do post the odd one out, where the artists have been kind enough to allow me to do so... Yes ! Dubwise, i like to do some Dubs and share it with yous.. The music industry and REALITY has been changing, as it allways has... Now if you come and say to me that acoustic music has been disapeering(ish) and has almost been toppled by the more digital genres-Thats another side to it ! You can hear in a good majority of tracks, that the ART OF GOOD ARRANGEMENTS (And yes, it is an art in itself) and composition has been disapeering and has suffered a lot... Where at the same time other arts have emerged( like remixing, re-versioning, whatever u wanna call it); I would agree with Gibbs when he encourages composers/Producers, etc to think about investing a bit in their own product. Someone said to me (an old schooler in the music bizniz) that if you truly believe in the quality of your material, and skills, you should never be afraid to invest in it. Jah knows i have. Do they have the right to give all their music away ? YES Are they hurting the music world( be it industry, quality and so on):Yes and NO, depending who's judging it ! Do we need to do something about it ? Of course What do we need to do, in order to better it all : DONT KNOW ! ID LIKE SOMEONE TO TELL ME ! As i dont have a clue ! These are just my thoughts about it all... Hope they are helpful ! Giving thanks Ras Bruno
