I hope you kill me all for this: ;-)
I think art should never be seen as a financial source or job first. This KILLS art. Nobody can really focus on the real core of art, nobody can ever DO HIS own thing completely unbiassed, if CA$H is the main reason of making music.

To me, being an artist is NOT and NEVER a job. Being an artist is a passion. And with a passion there's seldom money to be made. Because the powersource of the passion, individuality and creativeness fades away, if you relate it too much with the dirty money.

It is now 22 years since I did my first gig for cash. I have been in the big business as studiomusician and soundengineer at a rather big recording studio in Berllin. I saw many artists damaging their style and happyness with striving for the big money in the business.

All I can say is, that you are damn lucky if you manage it to live off your music. In most cases you pay a big price, creative and artistic freedom, for it. Mostly it is even that way, that when people pay for your music, they determine your creative freedom, because who pays, makes the rules.

Music is seldomly a job. Get a real job aside. This even solves all problems with missing equipment, if it is a good job. Otherwise: Try to do music for commercials, film and videogames. There's a lot of money to be made. I am currently stepping into that market and I am surprised what is possible there.

I think it will even get worse for musicians to make money. Enjoy the era of free art ;-)

For Dubcreator and all others who moan ;-)
What do you want? Prohibit free download? Force artists to charge cash for art? Turn back time? More regulationon the internet?

The music industry, who is by the way a bigger enemy than people who offer free downloads, is rejoicing about your moaning. Because they preach the same stuff and they are happy about your support.

Folks, your real enemy is the music industry. They pump millions of dollars into their advertising campaigns, so YOU are not be seen, but one of their artist-marionettes. Ican assure you: If the major record labels such as Time Warner, Sony Music etc. would vanish from the surface of the planet, you WOULD BE ABLE TO LIVE OFF YOUR MUSIC! If we all, who are giving away music for free would stop it, you would win nothing, because the music industry would eat "your part of the cake" quicker than you can say royaylties.

Nuff said, now shoot me

Well here in my hood this is no problem for me. If I have no cash I go to the turkish grocery shop at the corner and say "Hi Mahmud, have no cash today but I need some nice vegetables". Same is with some other shops here.

How does this work? Ok, I was a DJ at Mahmuds wedding (for feee), for the Kebap Shop I fixed their computer (for free), for the bakery woman I design advertisings and sometimes guard her likkle daughter to her basketballtraining late in the evening (for free).....................

A free world is possible. Smash capitalism by not playing the game!

It'll eat itself, and this will (for all of us) be no easy times. Capitalism is a beast which needs foood, foooood, foood... yeah good ole Mammon (do you know, that ole demon loves to eat likkle children for breakfast)... Once it doesn't get enuff food, the beast will first eat his masters and then itself.

Fanny Mae & co. are just the start. We will all have to suffer under the beasts last actions and a worldwide war will obviously come. The people in charge know that a good war rises economy. And for a worldwide mammon crisis there must be the mother of all wars to feed the beast.

So I put on a smile and my steel-helmet on and go to the bunker. Better days, soon come!

MAMMON?

Well 1st is you're the one who started moanin bout the generosity decreasing. As said before most people here work right outta the box, don't voice artists, work with budget gear . I pay for singers... i get compliments like 'i like this vocals' ... if i pay a singer, you defo can't expect me to put my tunes up for free.
1st off all is that i do my music for the love of it but at a certain point you want to raise it to the next level, nah stand still. So that means getting pro artists pon your tunes, getting pro gear, spending more time on the quality of a tune so that it's playable pon soundsystems.
I don't see others here who voiced established singers.
I did this little remix of the bird in hand riddim... was just for fun, spent an evening on it. Put that one up for download. Seems people like it....and download it becouse it's free. People like my other tunes as well but don't want to pay the louzy 99p.
I did the full production for the Peter Broggs album for free, so i don't see a penny from that as proceeds go to the singer as agreed before. Not generous ??

It's not that i make music for the money at 1st... why do i spend money on gear, artists getting things pressed ?
At 1st just to spead the music.. but it would be nice to make some back to be able to go on with these works.
If i wanted to get rich from music i would have chosen another style. But my heart is in the conscious roots.

i agree with the war but i dont know if they will ever really crumble...consolidate maybe but cease - i dont know. I can't see anything happening unless more people realise that the banks dont have their money

Dubcreator - would you stop making music altogether is you couldnt make a living from it? I doubt that was the reason you started with music all those years ago?

I think its sad that some people think if there's no money in music then music is dead, especially in a reggae context

I guess you'd better go somewhere where communism still is alive.......good concept on paper but nah work in real life as proved over the last millenia. As everybody is a capitalist deep inside.
Babylon is there always have been, so accept it and deal with it.

No i'll never stop making music... as stated in the above,
at 1st i make music for the love of it but if you want to take it to the next level it's a matter of doing investments to get singers and musicians in. I haven earnt a penny for several years with the music but at a certain point i wanted to go more in the roots direction instead of making plain dubs. I got bored with it.
It's not that need to make huge profits... but break even would be nice tho...
So indeed if there's no money in it... no vocal tunes will be produced and the production quality will aways be avarage.
Done with stricktly computer and behringer crap

if you check ralfs post (he's a good friend) you can see it a struggle for labels..... i'm giving my tunes to ralf for free if he wants to release. I did free mastering for him. Only thing i say is when he make a profit i want a piece of the cake. I had to ask some money for 1 release he did as i had to pay the singer.
But nothing for me....

There's no country where REAL communism is established. There's even no country where democracy has been established. What most people call a democracy, is a mix of plutocracy and kleptocracy.

If there was a real communist country, I think most artists would move there. I for sure.

Nothing is proved. You spread the propaganda of the NWO-shitstem
