I widened the Room mics. And added a "studio" type reverb on them. I added some compression to the Sub Kick and a little Mid Bass on the Kick. Phasers went all over the Hats and Spring Reverbs on the Toms and Timbale. The overheads I panned to widen a bit. That's it I think.

Thanks for the response. I am thrilled that that you liked it.

Nice approach. Sounds good what you did, and fits the track properly. Yeah, i usually can the room mics or have them waaaay low in the mix just for a little extra emph! I like the sound of the kit through the overheads more then room mics. I guess I'm partial to more of a dry sound. I just threw them in there since they were available, but you really dont even have to use them. But i really did like what you did on the track. Definitely got your signature sound on it.

Yeah I know what you mean. Alot of times in my limited experience Room Mics kind of add mud irritating reverb tails. On this though I liked the width. I think it made it seem more like being present in the room with the band.

Yeah, room mics are more of an old school technique when they were working with less inputs and tracks and you had to do that. And its way more used in rock n roll type stuff for the drums. Funk, and a lot of modern stuff, reggae included, is more of a dry and punchy sound, instead of that room abience tone. The rock guys love it on there drums though. It has its place though. Just depends on the content.

Thumbs up Fixed the 1982 track drums sync!!!

Greets

after some precious help from Lackatee I fixed the FUTURE PAST 1982 (Style Scott) drum loops and the track is sounding much sweeter now!

Please scrap the old mp3 if you downloaded it!

Track can be found here -

I've been working on a dub of your tune, Lackatee and I wasn't too sure about those overheads and room tracks so I just kinda pushed them right and left as labelled but I haven't dropped their level relative to the other tracks (not yet anyway........) but I may go back and listen to it again this morning given what Bill says re muddiness altho I didn't notice any muddying of the sound - in fact, I thought they sounded remarkably clean - in fact I ended up dosing them with lots of reverb from Meef's "springy reverb" rack.
I agree with Bill that they seem to give a real presence to the drum tracks.

I will post the finished dub later today.

When I upgraded to Ableton Live 7 I also bought their Session Drums pack and I must admit so far I've been really intimidated by the range of hits included in the multimic kits and generally I have just dialled up a custom kit rather than mess with all those room, overhead and close hits. Now that I have messed with room and overheads on this track I will definitely get deeper in to those kits in future.
cheers

Nice man. That's what its all about. Learning and exploring the sounds and doing what you like. Theres no right or wrong to creativity. If you like the MS room mics. Use em. I usually can them, but that's my personal preference. Like i said before, I like the sound of the overall kit through the overheads, but that's just me. The room mics can def get you an old school sound and feel though if that's what your going for in your mix.

Yeah, i need to upgrade to 7 myself. Still rocking. But the rex file support, Drum racks, the "Solo in place', and my EDIT button back, is worth the upgrade alone. Plus i think it sounds better now as well, and it REALLY runs a lot smoother on my box then 6 does. Still in demo mode though. Havent had a chance to mess around with the session drums pack yet. Looks interesting. How do they sound?

Live 7 is great for all the reasons you mention plus being able to slice to midi is a new treat for me and also multiple automation lanes which makes editing so much easier. The only drawback for me personally has been the loss of my remote sl37 which has been goosed since I moved to 7. huge audio crackles and dropouts when I hook it up. some kind of midi feedback issue - hopefully they'll sort it out eventually.

The session drums are 28gb and sound amazing to me. As I said already I'm not sure if I have the expertise to get the most out of them - abletons drum racks are complex enough - but I mean to explore them some more soon.
cheers

Oh yeah, the multiple lanes is nice as well. Forgot about that one. There's a lot of little things that they don't mention, that i wish they would document. For some reason they don't. Oh yeah, the note pad is cool as well. That's the only thing i can think off the top of my head.

You got your hands full with 28g You'll get some use out of them I'm sure. Just got to dive in and start using them. It will all come natural, I'm sure. Looking foward ot the drum racks myself.
