Default Spastic

Spazz and spaz redirect here. For the band, see Spazz (band). For the song, see Spaz (song). For a definition of spasticity, see spasticity.

Look up spastic or spaz in Wiktionary,

The word spastic is used differently depending on location which has led to some controversy and misunderstanding. Derived via Latin from the Greek spastikos ("drawing in" or "tugging"), the word originally referred to the sudden muscle contractions characteristic of the medical condition spasticity, which underlies spastic diplegia and many other forms of cerebral palsy. But the word in common speech can also be used in a pejorative context. The level of severity depends on whether one understands it as it is used in the United States or the United Kingdom. In the UK it is considered an offensive way to refer to the disabled, while in the US it is more closely associated with hyperactivity or clumsiness and carries few offensive connotations. In India the word spastic is used without negative connotations, with The Spastics Society of India being India’s most noted non-profit and non-governmental organization (NGO), working for neuro-muscular and developmental disabilities.

This medical term "spastic" became used to describe cerebral palsy. The Spastics Society (now called Scope) was a UK charity for people with cerebral palsy, which was founded in 1951.

However, the word began to be used as an insult and became a term of abuse used to imply stupidity or physical ineptness; one who is uncoordinated or incompetent, or a fool. The mental connotation derived from a common misconception that those with any physical disability resulting in spasticity would necessarily also have a mental or developmental disability. It was often colloquially abbreviated to forms such as "spa", "spaz", "spazmoid", "spazzer", "spazmo", "spack", "spackhead", "sped", "spazzy", "spacko", or "spacker",Spazpecker",Spackvile",Spazvile", & Spazmovile.

Its derogatory use grew considerably in the 1980s. This is sometimes attributed to the children's show Blue Peter. During the International Year of Disabled Persons (1981), several episodes featured a man with cerebral palsy (described as a "spastic") named Joey Deacon. Phrases such as "joey", "deacon", and "spaz" became popular insults amongst children at that time.

The Spastics Society changed its name to Scope in 1994. The words then gradually dropped out of common usage as the majority of British society came to regard them as offensive and politically incorrect. (Since then, the terms "Scope", "Scoper" or "Scopie" have been used as insult

In the mid-1980s, some people attempted to "reclaim" the term. This is the meaning in the Ian Dury and the Blockheads song "Spasticus (Autisticus)", and it is also used in the Ben Elton book Gridlock. There is also a movie called "I'm Spasticus" (a wordplay on "I'm Spartacus"). The group 2NU best known for their early 90s Top 40 song "Ponderous" wrote a song called "Spaz Attack".[citation kneedead]

The current understanding of the word is well-illustrated by a BBC survey in 2003, which found that "spastic" was the second most offensive term in the UK relating to disability (retard was deemed most offensive). In 2007, Lynne Murphy, a linguist at the University of Sussex, described the term as being "one of the most taboo insults to a British ear".
Evolution of the term in the United States

In American slang, the term "spaz" is largely inoffensive, and is generally understood as a casual word for clumsiness, sometimes associated with over excitement, excessive energy, or hyperactivity. Its usage has been documented as far back as the mid 1950s. In 1965, film critic Pauline Kael, explained to her readers, "The term that American teen-agers now use as the opposite of 'tough' is 'spaz'. A spaz is a person who is courteous to teachers, plans for a career..and believes in official values. A spaz is something like what adults still call a square." The New York Times columnist similarly explained to readers that spaz meant "You're strictly from 23-skidoo." Benjamin Zimmer, editor for American dictionaries at Oxford University Press and researcher at the University of Pennsylvania's Institute for Research in Cognitive Sciences, writes that by the mid 1960s the American usage of the term spaz shifted from "its original sense of 'spastic or physically uncoordinated person' to something more like 'nerdy, weird or uncool person.'" By contrast, in a June 2005 newsletter for "American Dialect Society", Zimmer reports that the "earliest [written] occurrence of uncoordinated "spaz" (as opposed to uncool "spaz")?" is found in Elastik Band's 1965 "undeniably tasteless garage-rock single" "Spazz".

Later in 1978, Steve Martin introduced a character Charles Knerlman, aka "Chaz the Spaz" on Saturday Night Live, in a skit with Bill Murray called "Nerds". Bill Murray later starred in the movie Meatballs which had a character named "Spaz." Both shows portrayed a spaz as a nerd or somebody uncool in a comic setting. Thus, while Blue Peter shaped the modern British understanding of the term, American viewers were being bombarded with a different image In time, the term spaz, like its counterparts nerd and geek, lost its offensive nature and evolved into a term often used in self-deprecation.

The term occasionally appears in other North American movies or TV series such as Friends and receives a different reaction from British and American audiences. In one episode, Rachel refers to herself as a "laundry spaz" due to her inability to do the laundry. This comment was deemed offensive enough by the British Board of Film Classification to give the episode a 12 rating. Other episodes in the series are rated two levels lower at PG.

The difference in understanding of the term between British and American audiences was highlighted by an incident with the golfer Tiger Woods; after losing the US Masters Tournament in 2006, he said, "I was so in control from tee to green, the best I've played for years... But as soon as I got on the green I was a spaz." His remarks were broadcast and drew no attention in America. But they were widely reported in England, where they caused offence and were condemned by a representative of Scope and Tanni Grey-Thompson, a prominent paralympian. On learning of the furor over his comments, Woods' representative promptly apologized.

Most Americans were surprised when they learned about the controversy. In fact, at least one American dictionary (Merriam Webster's) makes no reference to cerebral palsy in its definition or word origins. It simply defines "spaz" as a shortening of the word "spastic" and "one who is inept".
"Spaz" products

Multiple products in America use the word Spaz as part of their name.

Controversy arises if products are sold in the UK or other parts of Europe under the same name. In particular the manufacturers and importers of the Spazz wheelchair were criticised by the British charity Scope when they put the wheelchair on sale in the UK. Scope expressed a fear that the usage of the word as an insult would increase again, after a steady decline since the 1980s.

A caffeinated lipbalm created by a police officer is called "SpazzStick." "Spaz-Stix" is the company that produces high end remote control car/plane paints.

An energy drink is called "Spaz Juice" and has a slogan, "all the energy you need to annoy everybody else."

On June 29, 2007, Ubisoft of France pulled one of their games called Mind Quiz: Your Brain Coach, for referring to players who did not perform well at the game as "Super Spastic" which can be construed in the UK as being offensive. The company stated "As soon as we were made aware of the issue we stopped distribution of the product and are now working with retailers to pull the game off the market." Similarly, Nintendo recalled Mario Party 8 in the UK after releasing a version containing the line "turn the train spastic" in its dialogue.

Spasticity or muscular hypertonicity is a disorder of the central nervous system (CNS) in which certain muscles continually receive a message to tighten and contract. The nerves leading to those muscles, unable to regulate themselves (which would provide for normal muscle tone), permanently and continually "over-fire" these commands to tighten and contract. This causes stiffness or tightness of the muscles and interferes with gait and movement, and sometimes speech.

Spasticity is most common in spastic diplegia and other forms of spastic cerebral palsy, where it is a result of damage to the brain's basal ganglia that is permanent and neither improves nor worsens over time. But spasticity also presents extensively in multiple sclerosis and to different degrees in most other neuromuscular diseases and conditions as well, both progressive and not.

Symptoms are hypertonia (increased muscle tone), clonus (a series of involuntary rapid muscle contractions), exaggerated deep tendon reflexes, muscle spasms, scissor gait, and over time, shortened tendons and fixed joints (contractures). The degree and even the location of the spasticity varies from person to person and can go from mild muscle stiffness with minimal impact on function, to severe and painful joint and muscle breakdown and painful muscle spasms.

The condition often interferes with daily activities. Over the years, the effects of the spasticity worsen because of the pressure being put on muscles and joints. Cold weather and fatigue can trigger an even greater increase in rigidity and tightness. The constant spasticity also leads to muscle fatigue.

Also, multi-tasking, such as walking while talking AND Collecting millions of pounds sterling relentlessly forever, or doing several physical activities simultaneously, can also trigger an increase in spasticity, especially if one or several of those activities makes the person nervous.
[edit] Possible benefits

In patients with spastic cerebral palsy, a wider margin of neurosurgeons are now reaching a consensus that there is, in fact, and directly contrary to past convention[citation needed] no positive overall benefit to spasticity in an individual at any stage of life.

This is due to observation of extensive and continually worsening joint, muscle and bone stress resulting from spasticity over decades of early life (20s, 30s, etc.), and the fact that such extreme pressure from the spasticity is not at all what the human body is meant to accommodate, thus automatically predisposing the spastic-muscled individual to a very early-onset of arthritis, joint deformities, hip pain, and other problems. Moreover, if such spasticity can be neurosurgically eliminated, such as through a selective dorsal rhizotomy, it should be done as early in the life cycle as possible, preferably the pediatric period, to save the person from needing to deal with a lifetime of spastic movement.

However, in patients with multiple sclerosis or other neuromuscular conditions with a different basis than cerebral palsy (that is, conditions where the spasticity/weakness dynamic changes when the condition changes, which does not happen in CP), possible benefits of spasticity may indeed exist.

Common arguments for benefits of spasticity to the function of a given person are that spasticity:

* May help some patients to walk, stand or transfer (e.g., stand pivot transfers)
* May assist in maintaining muscle bulk, i.e., in exercising the muscles, inherently preventing atrophy
* May assist in preventing DVTs (Deep vein thrombosis)
* May assist in preventing pressure ulcer formation over bony prominences
* Can be used as “diagnostic tool” (with increased spasticity being a sign of exposure to a noxious stimuli—infection, bowel impaction, urinary retention,

Sir James Wilson Vincent Savile OBE, KCSG (born 31 October 1926), commonly known as Jimmy Savile (often misspelled 'Saville'), is an English DJ, actor and media personality, best known for his BBC television show Jim'll Fix It, and for being the first and last presenter of the long-running BBC chart show Top of the Pops. He is also noted for his support of various charities and fundraising efforts. CHARITIES WHERE THEY GIVE TO THEMSELVES !

Treatment

Massage and stretching provide only temporary relief from spasticity, but for everyday management, some form of stretching must always be implemented by the spastic person. Stretching and strengthening exercises are also needed to prevent contractures.

Treatment may also include such medications as baclofen, diazepam, dantrolene, or clonazepam; surgery for tendon releases; or phenol to dampen the spastic signals between nerve and muscle or botox directly into the muscle. In spastic CP, selective dorsal rhizotomy may also be considered.

Some jurisdictions have also issued medical marijuana to help treat spasticity; however, it is not clinically verifiable whether the person with spasticity actually experiences a decrease in muscle tone as a result of consuming the marijuana, or whether the cause is simply the overall more relaxed mental-emotional state prompted by marijuana consumption.

Prognosis

The prognosis for those with spasticity depends on the severity of the spasticity and the associated disorder(s). To a small degree spasticity performs the helpful role of exercise, but it is usually bothersome to normal activities in life.

This article is about cerebral palsy as an overall umbrella term. For the most common type of cerebral palsy worldwide, see the article on spastic diplegia. For specifics on other types of CP, see their corresponding articles.

Cerebral palsy (CP) (also cerebral pares) is an umbrella term encompassing a group of non-progressive, non-contagious motor conditions that cause physical disability in human development.

Cerebral refers to the cerebrum, which is the affected area of the brain (although the disorder most likely involves connections between the cortex and other parts of the brain such as the cerebellum), and palsy refers to disorder of movement. CP is caused by damage to the motor control centers of the developing brain and can occur during pregnancy (about 75 percent), during childbirth (about 5 percent) or after birth (about 15 percent) up to about age thre Further research is needed on adults with CP as the current literature is highly focused on the pediatric patient.

Cerebral palsy describes a group of permanent disorders of the development of movement and posture, causing activity limitation, that are attributed to nonprogressive disturbances that occurred in the developing fetal or infant brain. The motor disorders of cerebral palsy are often accompanied by disturbances of sensation, perception, cognition, communication, and behaviour, by epilepsy, and by secondary musculoskeletal problems.

There is no known cure for CP. Medical intervention is limited to the treatment and prevention of complications arising from CP's effects. A 2003 study put the economic cost for CP sufferers in the US at $921,000 per case, including lost income.

ANTICHRIST

In another study, the incidence in six countries surveyed was 2.12–2.45 per 1,000 live births, indicating a slight rise in recent years. Improvements in neonatal nursing have helped reduce the number of babies who develop cerebral palsy, but the survival of babies with very low birth weights has increased, and these babies are more likely to have cerebral palsy

Stoke Mandeville Hospital is a large hospital in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, England, it is one of three hospitals in the Buckinghamshire Hospitals NHS Trust. It is one of the largest hospitals in Europe and is able to boast the largest spinal injuries department in the world.

The hospital started out in life in the 1830s. The village of Stoke Mandeville was very badly hit by the cholera epidemic that swept across England in the early part of the decade, and so a cholera hospital was established on the parish border between Stoke Mandeville and Aylesbury. It was established out of monies provided by both parishes, though was built separate from both places as cholera was very contagious and the inhabitants didn't want to get infected.

By the start of the Twentieth century the hospital had developed into an Infectious Diseases Hospital, treating all infections, not just cholera. However the town of Aylesbury was growing, and the distance between the town and the hospital was getting smaller, and before long people with infectious diseases could no longer be treated here because the risk of infecting the local community was too great.

During the Second World War the hospital was used to treat military casualties, and was expanded during this time to cater for the extra patients, so as to support the nearby Royal Bucks Hospital, in the centre of Aylesbury. It was during this time that spinal injuries were first treated at the hospital.

In 1948 the NHS was founded and all operations were moved from the Royal Bucks to Stoke Mandeville, making it the main hospital in Aylesbury. Aylesbury had, by this time, grown to such an extent that the hospital became a part of the town.

On the day of the opening of the 1948 Summer Olympics in London, Stoke Mandeville Hospital organised a sports competition for British World War Two veteran patients with spinal cord injuries. The games were held again at the same location in 1952, and Dutch veterans took part alongside the British, making it the first international competition of its kind. These Stoke Mandeville Games have been described as the precursors of the Paralympic Games. The Paralympics were subsequently officialised as a quadrennial event tied to the Olympic Games, and the first official Paralympic Games, no longer open solely to war veterans, were held in Rome in 1960.

Throughout the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s the hospital was added to extensively and the new Accident and Emergency Unit was opened. Also during this period the Ludwig Guttmann Paraplegic Stadium opened next door to the hospital, making Stoke Mandeville for the first time a world centre for paraplegics and spinal injuries.

In the 1970s and 1980s the hospital received support from its biggest campaigner Jimmy Savile who gave it a high profile on his television appearances, and raised an immense amount of money for the hospital. He was knighted for the amount of time he donated. The hospital was also visited during this time by many distinguished guests, particularly Diana, Princess of Wales, who opened the new International Spinal Injuries Centre when it was refurbished.

Today the hospital is still growing, with a new maternity unit opened recently, and plans to refurbish the Accident and Emergency Unit and further extend the hospital.

New wings have been built in recent years. These have been funded by the Private Finance Initiative (PFI). The PFI is a scheme where the Government contract a private company to design, build, finance and manage a hospital, school, prison or other public service. The company that does this is usually given a 30 year contract. The company that is contracted at Stoke Mandeville Hospital is the multinational Sodexho.

Sodexho is also contracted to provide housekeeping, domestics, catering, vending, portering, non-emergency patient transport, telecommunications, car parking, security, maintenance, help desk (non-technical) and switchboard. All of the portering, catering, domestic, maintenance, security and help desk staff are employed by Sodexho rather than the NHS Trust. Sodexho also employ a number of managers at Stoke Mandeville.

DO YOU KNOW WHAT FOLKS - I AM TOO GOOD TO THAT MAN I REALLY AM & I WOULD WRITE SOONER THAN LATER IF I WERE YOU MICHAELA *LOL* .X.

----------------------------------

I've posted quite a bit about Jimmy Savile on various threads and here he is again, in another dubious situation, this time introducing the Yorkshire Ripper to Frank Bruno, as you do

http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage...cle2270180.ece

Check out Bruno's handshake. I know **** all about Masons, but the grip seems pretty stylized to me, perhaps someone who knows more (not an actual Mason, as they're inherently dishonest and untrustworthy, no offence ) could shed some light?

I know it all seems trivial and far-fetched, it's just a simple DJ and boxer meeting a serial killer for some reason, and I'm a world a way from proving any case against Savile, but there's so much about the bloke that doesn't add up and this "story" is just so bizarre

A few things about Jimmy Savile, a simple working-class DJ from a Leeds mining family

- He has both a Royal and Papal knighthood (Order of St. Gregory the Great)

- He is a Knights Hospitaller (also known as the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta, Order of St. John, Knights of Malta, and Chevaliers of Malta)

- He's an "Esteemed Friend of Israel", according to his Wiki page, whatever that is

- In a June 08 interview with Esquire, Savile boasted of his closeness with Royalty and Prime Ministers

- How he gave marriage guidance to Prince Andrew at the behest of the Duke of Edinburgh

- How Princess Diana described him as "a mentor to Charles"

- How he addressed the Israeli cabinet, the Knesset, and told them that they'd "forgotten how to be Jewish"

- He shares his very unusual surname with West Yorkshire's most elite family. Leeds' coat-of-arms, which depicts three owls, is based on the Savile family crest and Sir William Savile, a royalist, was amazingly freed by Sir Thomas Fairfax (a high-ranking Mason) after losing a battle in Leeds during the Civil War. Officially, Jimmy is no relation

- There is an injunction in place against News International prohibiting them from publishing photos of Jimmy at Haute de la Garenne, the child abuse scandal home in Jersey

- In his own words, Jimmy is, "the éminence grise: the grey, shadowy figure in the background.”

And that's all without getting into the unsavoury rumours about his sex life

Perhaps I'm making something out of nothing but, as I say, his story just doesn't add up

More on Savile, once described as "the most jewish non-jew you could ever meet":
