I used to think that, but not so sure anymore. Many fans are happy to support the artist, and the culture of spending money on the net is just in its first phase. Just wait for the day when teenagers will get "download tokens" for their birthday presents

I guess the real future is that people get free dowloads and artists get paid na rato from advertisements income.
That was some years ago on MP3.com. People could download for free but artists got paid per download.

the majority of artists make money now from doing gigs and selling merchandise.i play in 2 bands and we make good money on cd,s at gigs
but sell very few via internet.i find that older people still like to get that product in their hand and are happy to buy your cd,especially if they like your sound live and younger people spend the small amount of money they have on booze and never have enough money left to buy a cd.

i used to have stuff on mp3.com and it worked for a while.i sold at least 30 albums and quite a lot of downloads and even got a couple of cheques from them but it didn't last.even though it is on the internet, you still have to do the promotion and let everyone know where it is.we are all little fish in a massive pond and i don't think that many people are searching all the websites looking to buy music.you spend all day on myspace and hear tons of great music so why buy it.you can come to this site and make a great playlist and just let it run so why buy it.
i still think the only way to make a living is to get out the studio and let the people see you playing it.it is hard work so you have to have a deep love for what you are doing.
maybe the future will be different when the computer generation has finally taken over and record shops don't exist anymore.
i have never bought a download yet but then it is years since i went to a record shop.

phats.

Get out the studio is easier said than done. I got a family to support and just can't go on the road all day. I'm a producer and engineer, not a live musician. I do DJ sets once in a while but to keep on producing tunes i def need some income from the music i make. I pay for singers, i pay for gear, i pay for lots of tings...... so why should people not pay for music then.
You nah go to the bakery and say... give me a free bread becouse i like it..... same ting brethrin.
Performing artists it easier... them come in my studio, voice a tune and get their fee. Then i have to finish the tune, spend lots of hours on it and then have to get it out there somehow.
I could press on a CD... here you go... another investment and then see if it gets back.... nah it doesn't as there are too many tieves on the net ripping the CD and put it pon P2P sites.
Or just sell my album pon these russian dowload sites for 2 dollar. Me nah see a penny from that.

yeh,i know what you mean,i produce in my own studio too.i agree that you should be paid if someone wants to hear your work.
maybe now that internet providers are starting to prosecute people who file share it may change the free for all but they will probably find another way round it.
the good thing about mp3.com was that when people listened to your music you at least accumulated some kind of payment but i am sure they must have lost loads of money as people didn't really buy much.

most musicians and producers that i know all have to supplement their income with other work ieainters, plumbers or whatever they can do to earn a living, even some of the well known guys.
i also understand that trying to put a band together and take your music out would probably cost you more in the short term.most of the venues don't want to pay either.
one of the problems as i see it is,thousands of artists are giving their music away, even signed artists and until people get control of file sharers then we as artists have no choice if we want people to listen to our music.
but the good thing is,you don't need to give everything to a record company now to get your music heard.
also printing off loads of cd,s when you are not gigging is dangerous.
i have been left with a couple of boxloads in the past and ended up giving them away.

I would be very cautious about producing a CD these days. Many CD's by some of the big name artists do not sell very much. People like something if it is free (download mp3), but if they have to pay then it is different. FREE mp3's are a good promotion and you can make some money selling mp3's. (Probably not a lot of money at .99 a pop)

Well if you press vinyl there's not more profit than .99 a copy.
So that doesn't make a big difference exept that you don't have to invest a 1000 euro's to get them pressed.
I still got loads of vinyl left at a distributer.
