interesting one this Willie , most of the time when we put an mp3 for stream only here it's simply to gauge an opinion or feedback (if any) from fellow artist's & producers which help's us with the decision making as whether to release the track further down the line ,or sometimes the tune is already earmarked for release so it becomes a 'promo stream' a pre release stream so to speak ,for us it's either one of those two reasons ,it's just protecting what may be a release by not giving it away ,by and large it's artist's who frequent this site but the general public do come in as guest's and take the downloads and you can never be certain that someone won't re distribute it under a different name etc ,each to his own but for us unless it's a freebie promo download to coincide with a release or dub muckabout radio style then it's stream only . Any releases of ours go up to iTunes ,Amazon ,Napster and soon HMV online store and Tesco as we're changing our distributor.

interesting thread...I'm all up for my tunes going out for free as I'm new to the game. I'm also not sure my tunes are off a qulitiy worth paying for. also never thought of someone distributuing them under a different name before. in some ways that would be quite a complement, maybe in the future I could make some coin from my tunes but for now i'm over the moon that people have downloaded them and that out there in the wibbly wobbly web someone may be listening to my tunes on the pod right now. If you have tips on how to make coin from music these days please let me know(may be thats another tread)

if the public like it they'll buy it ,if not they wont, simple.
whole thing is a learning curve ,takes a while to find the right 'sound' or artist to release then to find the market to sell to (where they hang out) ..this coming from an internet label point of view not as an individual artist. Our job is to sell the vibe to the kids who buy mp3's online ,some do, some say no thanks ,freedom of choice. By and large it helps an artist to have a label ,simply because a label will have a few names in the contacts file that it can call on ocassionally to help spread the word and gain recognition via word of mouth further than most artist's can DIY style ,we have various routes and avenues that we can go down that most individual artist's don't have access to ,sure anyone can put tunes up for sale to iTunes and Napster ,but that ain't enough unless you know where and what to do afterwards and of course have the time to do it. Learning curve. Our first two releases were big flops ,we didn't know what we were doing ,newbee's in the label arena ,but now after nearly two years we're making headway ,time is the biggest problem ,not money ,it's having the time to promote one's self fully ,to network everywhere ,not just myspace (the big AD dot com,,bless) but everywhere, you have to send your tune to every radio station you can find ,some wont play it ,some will, you have to continuously update your profile on community sites ,you have to have your own website/s and dont be scared to tell people about them ,update them regular style, change your image and branding once in a blue moon to create a 'something happening' feel ,you may piss people off with constant reminders of what ya doing ,so what ,your trying to compete with other's to sell the works you've worked damned hard to create. Solo ,DIY is all very good ,but by and large you just dont have the time or energy to promote webwide after creating the vibe's you wanna sell. Hence the label. link up with as many people as you can ,do favours and you'll get them back ,help for help, network, stay away from politics on forums, and dont take any shit from anyone, if you really know that what you're doing is half decent then your halfway there in the battle ,but it helps to have backing...if a label thinks your good enough to back!!! (usually personal preference ) another point; a label probably wont be too interested in an artist if they constantly give their music away, to a label that signifies a non confidence in the works. From a label point of view ,i must underline this. Talking to a couple of Ja veterans recently on the phone (and bare in mind the internet is a luxury over there) about the majority of indie reggae artist's giving it all away on many sites ,shocked and surprised isn't the word ,they were stunned. but ,each to his own ,everyone has a choice where they wanna go and what they do with their works. I've given my own personal tunes away from when i was in a band as free downloads here at RDW so i do understand somewhat as a fellow/ former indie artist. One thing ,a label - however more it can do - still can not guarantee sales. I can't be 'more cards on the table' than that mate..luck of the draw. Confidence is the other half of the battle by the way. bless. |

Everything's free if you want it enough
Tracks I've set as streaming only are usually one's that are being used for a CD or one's that are not 100% finished |

If folks are happy to become the stars they are without label refusals & X factor spit in your face altitudes / Commercial , confidence robbery en masse...
I say that cos all have the ability to open the music door anyway without having to be shat on by opinioned moneygrabbing shitehawks ... Who's mistake is it ? Yours of course for giving them the opportunity to refuse you ! Lies are one thing & stupidity is another I guess ... The music Biz is an empty barrel making little noise and the deal days have become a myth , a distant memory - Legends bought & sold - Top of the pops has turned off it's lights whilst the wizard walked away shaking it's head...The first DJ pulls the switch. I'm happy to seek out all free tunes as when the legendary labels have faded away into an ever increasing obscurity and the 88 cent purse ya fockin lips sweetheart vomit busters have spewed the sickening stench of the buy me or you don't get to try me suckers have all gone like a bald octopuses t-wat Then again i am happy to share the fruits of what is all free ; ) I see a child climbing the mortgage ladder with the vision of pure profit and it's childrens children being outpriced in it's quest for just a roof over it's head ... A few kids here and there will scoop an inheritance and the life insurers offer fancy kitchens in dentist waiting room brochures ... *LOL*
