the majority of artists make money now from doing gigs and selling merchandise.i play in 2 bands and we make good money on cd,s at gigs
but sell very few via internet.i find that older people still like to get that product in their hand and are happy to buy your cd,especially if they like your sound live and younger people spend the small amount of money they have on booze and never have enough money left to buy a cd.

i used to have stuff on mp3.com and it worked for a while.i sold at least 30 albums and quite a lot of downloads and even got a couple of cheques from them but it didn't last.even though it is on the internet, you still have to do the promotion and let everyone know where it is.we are all little fish in a massive pond and i don't think that many people are searching all the websites looking to buy music.you spend all day on myspace and hear tons of great music so why buy it.you can come to this site and make a great playlist and just let it run so why buy it.
i still think the only way to make a living is to get out the studio and let the people see you playing it.it is hard work so you have to have a deep love for what you are doing.
maybe the future will be different when the computer generation has finally taken over and record shops don't exist anymore.
i have never bought a download yet but then it is years since i went to a record shop.

phats.
